Benjamin Behr was a son of Abraham Behr and Esther de Vries. His parents were married in Groningen but after their marriage they lived among others in Haarlem and Rotterdam where Benjamin was born. His brother Jozef was born in 1914 in Groningen.

Benjamin Behr served the Jewish Community in Deventer since 1936. He was cantor as well as teacher of the Jewish school. In Hoogezand, where the family came from, he had the same functions.
Bejamin Behr was a small but solid man with a dark beard. He was a born storyteller. Benjamin Behr was secretary of the Board for the Poor Relief as well as secretary of the Jewish Council section Deventer. He was responsable for the emigration section and supported non-Dutch Jews.
