Gerda Irena Lion was the daughter of Betty Weinberg née Steinitz (widowed Lion, born 29 October 1900 in Swietochlowice, Poland), who in 1939 lived at Kurfürstendamm 203/204 in Berlin-Charlottenburg. Gerda emigrated to the Netherlands, with her last residence listed as Breslau (now Wrocław, Poland) on 3 November 1938. Her mother Betty emigrated to the United Kingdom on 5 July 1939 and lived there in London. On her Alien Internee record she wrote that she was a "German, formerly Dutch" citizen, suggesting she must also have lived in the Netherlands at some point. On 18 October 1946 Betty emigrated to New York, USA, where she died in February 1983.
Betty was unable to get her daughter Gerda to the UK prior to the outbreak of the war in September, 1939. She left a testimonial for her daughter on Yad Vashem.
