Louis-Benjamin was zevende kind uit een gezin van tien kinderen. Zijn ouders waren Benjamin-Willem van Dam en Elisabeth Hartog Marcus. Op 12 augustus 1932 huwde hij te Maastricht met Fanny Wesly, dochter van Leonard Wesly en Jenny Kahn. Fanny had nog een zus. Louis-Benjamin was chef van de brei-inrichting bij een textielproducent.
