Benjamin van Engel came from a family of butchers. His father, Daniël van Engel (1857-1937) had a butcher's shop in the Grote Overstraat, in the town of Deventer.
In 1921, Benjamin was among the founders of the "Tikwas Jisroel" society of Deventer, that provided Jewish religious education for children in the age of 12 to 18.
