Joseph Pach had sinds begin 1940 een chocolaterie in de Weesperstraat genaamd "BeJo". De naam van de chocolaterie is een samenvoeging van de eerste twee letters van Betje, de naam van zijn vrouw, en de eerste twee letters van Josephs eigen naam.

Vanaf januari 1940 woonde Joseph Pach en zijn vrouw Betje Waterman aan de Weesperstraat 2, het eerste huis naast de brug naar het Jonas Daniel Meijerplein waar de gewapende Duitse soldaten tijdens de razzia’s hadden postgevat en iedereen grepen die zich op straat bevond.
