I was a hidden child in Limburg. I was hidden with my brother Philip by the Mandic Family. My father Marcus Pels did not survive the war. My mother Hendrika Brandon/Pels did and married Michel Engelschman after the war. He adopted my brother and myself and we took his name. In April 1952 we emigrated to Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Marcus Pels en zijn vrouw Hendrika Brandon waren ondergedoken in Utrecht, maar kwamen eind maart 1944 naar Amsterdam om in het huis van een kennis twee verzetsmensen te ontmoeten. Achteraf blijken dit Ans van Dijk en haar handlanger Simon van Hoorn te zijn. Marcus Pels vertelt hen bij deze ontmoeting dat hij zijn vermogen in bewaring heeft gegeven bij zijn kennis.

Marcus Pels was my father. The woman you are speaking of is my mother. Ans Van Dijk gave my parents up to the Germans. My mother survived the war my father did not.

According to a list with shops of Jewish owners, compiled by the Amsterdam police in 1940, this family had a wholesaler's business for biscuits, address: Nieuwe Kerkstraat 108 in Amsterdam.
