Sophia Merlena ‘Fietje’ Spanjar-Berg dook samen met haar echtgenoot Frits Spanjar en haar broer Jaap Berg onder in hun woonplaats Almelo. Na verraad viel de SD op vrijdagmiddag 30 juli 1943 de woning binnen waar Fietje, Frits en Jaap zich bevonden. De drie werden gearresteerd en via het plaatselijke politiebureau overgebracht naar Westerbork. Daarvandaan stuurden ze nog een brief.
