Radios were banned during the German occupation, and people listened to broadcasts in the deepest of secrecy. The Dutch government broadcast reports on the progress of the Allied forces from its temporary base in London. Queen Wilhelmina spoke to the Dutch nation every week in the programme ‘De stem van strijdend Nederland’ (‘The voice of the Netherlands at war’). These broadcasts were of great ideological significance.
