Abraham Ligtenstein sat for his medical finals in 1914. From 1915 to 1921 he was a health officer in the Dutch East Indies. He specialized in metabolic and tropical diseases and took his PhD degree in Amsterdam on 21 May 1924 for his PhD thesis on quantitative urobilene determination and blood degradation. He returned to the Dutch East Indies (Sumatra and Malang).
