Erna Sali Gimpel, alias Sala, emigrated from Poland to the Netherlands in the nineteen-thirties. She lived at her sisters house who came to the Netherlands at an earlier stage. Contrary to her sister and brother in-law, Erna Sali Gimpel reported herself with the authorities when she received a call up. Erna Sali Gimpel was unmarried and worked as a housekeeper.

Erna is samen met haar zus Edda Herzberg begin jaren '30 vanuit Sanok in Polen naar Nederland geëmigreerd. Tijdens de Eerste Wereldoorlog zijn de bevolkingsregisters in Sanok vernietigd, het plaatsje lag een tijdlang aan het Oostfront en is vrijwel volledig aan puin geschoten.
