Emanuel Querido was a son of Aron Querido and Esther Lopes Dias. As a young man he learned the diamond trade, but in 1899 he set up business as an independent bookseller on Binnen-Amstel in Amsterdam. That same year he married Jane Kozijn. The couple had one son. Emanuel Querido started out as a small bookseller, but in 1915 he founded the publishing-house N.V. Em. Querido in Amsterdam.
In 1929 the family moved to Laren, and in the spring of 1933 Emanuel Querido set up the exile publishing-house N.V. Querido Verlag, which published German-language books that could no longer be published in Hitler’s Germany. After 1940 the publishing-house was placed under the management of a Verwalter (German ‘caretaker’). Emanuel Querido and his wife went into hiding in Blaricum in 1943, but they were betrayed.
