On 20 October 1895 Hartog Hes married Mietje Marcus. The couple had a child who survived the war. Hartog and his wife owned a drapery shop, which later became a wholesale outfit, at 45 Melkmarkt in Zwolle. When their house was requisitioned during the war, they were forced to leave. They moved to 8 Rode Torenplein in Zwolle.
