On Saturday, 11 April 1942, at 7.00 PM, ten Jewish residents of Leeuwarden were arrested in retaliation for removing the sign 'No Jews allowed' from a public bench in the Vossepark. They were sent to the camp at Amersfoort. Simon Benninga was among them. He was married. He and his wife lived at 38 Transvaalstraat in Leeuwarden.
