Aäron Waagenaar and his family

Aäron Waagenaar was the widower of Sara Levenson, who died in 1917. Her brother Wolf Levenson was married to a sister of Aäron Waagenaar. One child that was still living at home survived the war, as did two grandchildren. Another child of Aäron Waagenaar’s had a mixed marriage and lived at a different address. In the large-scale raid carried out on 20 June 1943, this family just managed to escape deportation, because a German soldier let them go. The Waagenaar family is mentioned in Sonja Pos’s Daglicht (Amsterdam 1993). A number of poems dedicated to the family’s memory are included in the volume Het efficiënt vergeten (Amsterdam 1963), also by Sonja Pos.

In addition, Jokos files (numbers 20715, 20713) on this family or other family members are at the Amsterdam Municipal Archive. Access is subject to authorization from the Stichting Joods Maatschappelijk Werk.
