Noë Ernst Cohnen and his family

Noë Ernst Cohnen and Lily Cohen came from Meppen, just on the other side of the Dutch-German border at Emmen. They settled in Amsterdam, where Ernst found a job as a butcher at a slaughterhouse. Later on he worked at the Centraal Israëlitisch Ziekenhuis (CIZ), a Jewish hospital.
During the occupation, Noë Ernst Cohnen and Lily Cohen moved from Stadionweg to Paul Krugerstraat 9-II in the eastern part of Amsterdam. Ernst Cohnen thought they would be expected to work, and went to great lengths to procure a rucksack and a pair of heavy boots before their departure in July 1943.
