Jonas Salomon Jacob, sales representative and a son of Meijer Jacob (chief conductor) and Aaltje Valk, married in Gieten 29 April 1932 Jetta Alida Valk, a daughter of Benjamin Valk and Bartha Wallage. The couple had a daughter, Bartha Emilia and a son, Leon. The family lived in the Petrus Driessenstraat 20 in Groningen, opposite the Nautical College.
Jonas Salomon Jacob and Jetta Alida Valk met each other in Onstwedde, where Jetta Alida was born. After their marriage the couple left for Amsterdam, where their daughter Bartha Emalia was born. Her nickname was Barbara. The family left for Groningen, where their son Leon was born in 1940.
Jonas Salomon used to stroll up and down Petrus Driessenstraat, holding a book in front of the mandatory star. Jetta Alida had a narrow face and dark hair. She strolled with the baby carriage. She was afraid of the forced departure that was to come. She once told a neighbour that the Jews would go by express train and the non-Jews by the slow train, implicating that according to her, the Jews ran the greatest risk of being arrested, but that the non-Jews would be next on the list. In the evening of 2 October 1942 the family was taken away from their home. Jetta called out to the neighbours who were watching: Today we go, tomorrow you go.
The Jews of Groningen who were removed from their homes that evening, were gathered at the Central Station in Groningen and spent the night in a hangar of (transport company) Van Gend & Loos. They were deported via Westerbork transit camp to Auschwitz.
