About Izaak Cohen

Izaak Cohen (known as Chi) was the son of Hartog Cohen (known as Herman) and Rebekka van Essen. His father was an estate agent and appraiser in Deventer. He had four brothers and one sister. The Cohen children belonged to the Zionist movement when they were in their twenties. Chi and his brother Ru played a leading role in the Vereniging tot Vakopleiding van Palestinapioniers (Association for the Occupational Training of Palestine Pioneers). Chi also ran the organization in Rotterdam that handled applications to emigrate to Palestine, and he was the editor of De Joodsche Wachter, the periodical produced by the Nederlandse Zionistenbond (Dutch Zionist League).
