Samuel van Staveren, known as Salco, arrived at Groningen University in 1939 to study medicine. In 1940, he became a founding member of the student association De Groene Uil (The Green Owl). Samuel van Staveren was one of the driving forces behind the Uilencabaret (Owl Cabaret). His name is mentioned in the book Academische illusies. De Groningse universiteit in een tijd van crisis, bezetting en herstel 1930-1950, by Prof. K. van Berkel (Amsterdam 2005). His name is missing from the memorial plaque for students at that university who died during the war.
