During an inspection of the drop zone, he was arrested on 9 February 1945 by the Grüne Polizei and the Landwacht near Wognum and detained in the Obdam Remand centre. He was shot while trying to escape. He was transferred to Scheveningen prison where he died on 25 February 1945.
