About Saul Sohlberg

On the death of rabbi Saul Sohlberg in April 1941, an article appeared in Het Joodsche Weekblad. Rabbi Saul Sohlberg was with his children in Coevorden when he died at the age of 81. For considerable time, Sohlberg was the rabbi-director of the religious schools of the Dutch-Jewish Main Synagoge of Amsterdam. He was descended from a famous line of rabbis, including the offspring of the Amsterdam chief rabbi Chacham Tsewi (1660-1718). Rabbi Sohlberg studied at the Dutch-Jewish Seminary and at the University of Amsterdam. In 1885, he acquired the highest Jewish-theological degree (moree). In 1888, he was appointed director (later, rabbi-director) of the religious schools at the Jonas Daniel Meyerplein. He was also a lecturer at the Dutch Jewish Seminary. He was very well-known as a mohel.
