Paul Kaufmann and his family, including his son Fred, lived in Berlin and Mönchengladbach in the nineteen twenties and early nineteen thirties. Before the war they returned to the Netherlands.
During the war the family went into hiding in Tietjerkstradeel (Bergum). Paul Kaufmann died on 7 October 1943, from nostalgia and sorrow. His wife survived the war.
In 2005, the grave of Paul Kaufmann was cleared. In honour to the family the headstone was replaced in the garden of the hiding address in Bergum.
