Joseph Cohen was a son of Levie Cohen and Mietje Goldsmith. He married 23 January 1901 in Amsterdam to Betje Salomon, a daughter of Samuel Salomon and Jansje Blok. The couple had seven children together, of whom two baby-boys have died very young and two sons died before the war, both over 30 years old. Their other three sons, Heiman, Comprecht and Benjamin have not surivived the Holocaust.
However, Betje Salomon passed away on 25 November 1935 and Joseph Cohen remarried 23 August 1939 to Rebecca Ossendrijver, the widow of Isaac Lootsteen and a daughter of Benedictus Ossendrijver and Cornelia Lek.
