Hartog Barnstein was a son of Meijer Barnstein and Grietje Kooker, a family with eleven children, among them he himself, Betje, Engeltje, Esther, Eva, Mina, and Maurits. Jetta, who was married to Hartog Zwalf, has survived the Holocaust as the only one of the children. Three children has already died at a very your age.
Hartog married Doortje Baars in Amsterdam on 5 September 1928, a daughter of Hartog Baars and Rebecca Brilleman.
