About Hijman Zwaab

Hijman Zwaab, born 1888, was a son of Mozes Zwaab and Hanna Gomes de Mesquita. At first, his trade was watch maker, just as his grandfather Gomes de Mesquita but later he became a travelling salesman. He was unmarried.

In the family of Hijman’s parents six children were born, namely Machiel (1875-1901), Rebecca (1877-1943), Joseph (1879-1942), Victor (1883-1942), Esther (1885-1886) and Hijman self (1888-1942).

Also Hijman left his parental home 4 July 1910 and moved into a house at Nieuwe Keizersgracht 29 in Amsterdam, together with his brothers Joseph and Victor. His father Mozes Zwaab had died already in 1902 and his mother Hanna Gomes de Mesquita passed away 23 May 1910; she was interred in the Jewish Cemetery at Muiderberg 25 May 1910.

In March 1913 Hijman moved to Blasiusstraat 95 and already one month later to nr. 92. In January 1914 his address became Roeterstraat 42 and after again one month: Oosterparkstraat 173. Since 3 August 1914 till 3 April 1917, Hijman has lived in with his sister Rebecca Zwaab and her husband Eliazer Gompers at Nieuwe Keizersgracht 56 2nd floor. Per 3 April 1917 he came living in with his brothers Joseph and Victor at Weesperstraat 10 but on 5 January 1918, he lived in again with his sister Rebecca and his brother-in-law Eliazer Gompers, where he stayed till November 1918. Afterwards he changed addresses again four times before he arrived 3 May 1932 at Pieter Aertszstraat 92 2nd floor. There he has lived till the he was fetched by the nazi’s and deported.

Friday 2 October 1942 Hijman Zwaab was deported to Westerbork and put on transport to Auschwitz still that same day. This transport with 1014 deportees, mad a stop at Kozel, ca. 80 km. west from Auschwitz, where 160 men between 15 and 50 years of age forcedly had to leave the train, to be employed then as forced labourers in the surrounding satellite camps of Auschwitz. Those who stayed back in the train, were transported to Auschwitz to be killed there on arrival.

However, Hijman Zwaab was not immediately sent to the gas chamber when he arrived on 5 Octbober 1942 in Auschwitz. He may have been selected there to be employed in the camp in any way. Only three weeks later, on 22 October 1942, he was killed in Auschwitz.
