Nathan Groen was a son of Moses Groen and Anna Elisabeth Meschendorf. He married in Den Haag on 18 November 1891 to Emelia Cohen. Together they had seven children: Mozes, Isidore, Alexander, Anna Elisabeth, Lion, Frederika and David who survived the Holocaust.

Nathan Groen earned his living as an umbrella-maker. His workshop was in the basement of his home.
The family counted 10 children, of which 3 were from the 1st marriage of Emelia and Emanuel van der Hart and 7 Emelia had together with Nathan Groen, of which only one son survived the war.
