Else Michaelis was baptized in 1919 and became a member of the Roman Catholic Church. In 1928 she joined the order of St. Joseph in Trier, taking on the name of Sister Mirjam. On 10 February 1938 she left Berlin, moving to Overschie in the Netherlands. On 9 September 1940, after travelling many places, she ended up with the Franscian nuns of Mariawaard in Meerssen. On 2 August 1942, Else Michaelis was taken to Westerbork, as was Edith Stein, who was later beatified. In 1993 a booklet commemorating Else Michaelis was published by the order of nuns to which she had belonged.
