Machiel Prins was the only child born in the Vught camp. Because his mother had to stand for hours during the roll call, he was born three months prematurely. He was deported to Westerbork with his mother on the so-called children's transport. A fellow-sufferer relates it as follows: 'He is a beautiful perfectly-formed boy. He only weighs two and a half pounds. With the help of other women, his mother managed to keep him warm during the journey by wrapping him in jumpers and cardigans.'
In Westerbork, commander Gemmeker immediately took measures to keep Machiel alive. He requested an incubator from Groningen and asked a professor in paediatrics, Van Creveld, to examine the baby. Two nurses were appointed to look after Machiel.
Machiel was drip-fed and every two hours, he was given a few drops of brandy from Gemmeker's supply. Gemmeker came to check up on him every day. Machiel gained strength. When he weighed five and a half pounds, he was transferred from the incubator to a cot. When he weighed six pounds, he was deported to Auschwitz.
