Untill 14 May 1940 Isaac van Baale lived with his family at the Gedempte Slaak in Rotterdam. The family lived in a house behind the small shop where Isaac van Baale sold drapery.
On Sundays the baker used to make his round through the neighbourhood selling his goods from a wooden bakersbarrow or bicycle. A former neighbour remembered that Johanna Meijer used to prepare the bread with salted meat or liver.
The neighbourhood of the Gedempte Slaak was heavily hit during the bombardment of 14 May 1940. As a result, Isaac van Baale and his family moved to the Galileistraat in Schiedam.
