Edith Katzenstein was the daughter of Hermann Katzenstein and Henriette Nagel. There were three children in the family; the other two survived the war. The Katzenstein family lived in Witzenhausen until 1929, and then moved to Kassel. Edith completed her training in Witzenhausen and found work in Kassel as a laboratory assistant to Dr Bauer, a chemist. She later worked at Reinhardshausen, a sanatorium in Bad Wildungen. In 1933, Edith emigrated to the Netherlands to work as a domestic servant. She stayed in England for a few months between 1936 and 1939, but felt she did not fit in there and so returned to the Netherlands.
