Nathan Mozes van Engers was the oldest of five children of Mozes van Engers and Dina de Vries. The family of his parents lived in Schiedam, Maassluis, Rotterdam and Delfshaven. From 1879 they lived permanently in Rotterdam. In 1897 he started his own business: he traded in iron, metal et cetera. He had a height of 1,68 metre.
