Julie Hellmann was from a strict Jewish Orthodox family. She attended the teachers' training college in Würzburg. On 13 July 1939 she arrived at the youth aliyah home at the Hof van Moerkerken in Mijnsheerenland, where she helped run the place and taught Hebrew, biblical studies and Jewish literature.
When the home in Mijnsheerenland was closed on 16 October 1940 she left for Arnhem. She was caught and deported trying to escape via the Pyrenees.
