At one point, Izaäk Israel Jacobs had an opportunity to go into hiding, but he did not want to deny medical care to his patients in Winschoten who could not travel. One evening a police officer told him that he would be picked up the next evening. The officer said, ‘I won’t do it. I don’t want to pick up Jews.’
Since Izaäk Israel Jacobs knew the local NSB police chief from his HBS [modern-style grammar school] days, he went to him immediately and asked whether it was true that he was going to be picked up. This made it clear to the police chief that there was a leak in the police force. Izaäk Israel Jacobs and his wife Edith were taken away that same night.
