Martin Arnold van Gelder came from a family with five children. His parents and one of the five children survived the war. His brother Jacob Henri and sisters Elly van Gelder and Hendrika Maas-van Gelder did not.

The Amsterdam police commissioner requested on behalf of the Sicherheitspolizei that the Jew Martijn van Gelder, residing at 115 Roerstraat in Amsterdam, be located, detained and brought to trial to the Jewish affairs precinct of the Amsterdam police. He also stayed with Berger at 10 Zomerdijkstraat in Amsterdam.
