Alfred van Gelderen was a son of Michel van Gelderen and Frederika Fedder, a family with four children: Alfred self, Jacob, Emma and Willem.
Alfred married Marianne Engelander in Zaandam on 7 January 1920, a daughter of Mozes Isaac Engelander and Doortje Sanders. Marianne survived the Holocaust.
