Biography

About Marcus Boas

In May 1941, Het Joodsche Weekblad published an obituary for Dr Marcus Boas. In a short obituary in the same edition of the weekly, he was called a 'famous teacher in classic languages and a prominent figure in the Amstelodamum association'. Marcus Boas studied at the Municipal University of Amsterdam. In 1903, the University rewarded him with a gold medal for answering a competition question in the domain of classic philology. He obtained his doctoral degree in Amsterdam in 1905 and then continued his studies in Bonn and Rome.

Marcus Boas published many works, particularly on subjects related to Latin philology. His favourite subject was the history of Amsterdam, which he wrote about profusely. He did research into texts on memorial tablets and inscriptions on old houses. He was a member of the Association for Jewish Science.

At his funeral, rabbi Coppenhagen said that Boas was 'a scientist, void of any superficiality, whose modesty was one of his trademarks'.
