Maurits Broekhuijsen was the son of Mozes Broekhuijsen and Hester Zwart. on 7 March1901 he got married in Den Haag to Susanne Hilsum, the daughter of Levie Jacob Hilsum and Reintje Rooselaar. The couple had two children who both survived the war.
Maurits Broekhuijsen and Susanne Hilsum both died at 14 May 1940. This may indicate that they committed suicide shortly after the German forces occupated the Netherlands.

From the tekst of the certificate of death nr, 1242, made out 17 May 1940 at the Civil Registry of Den Haag, it appeared that Barend Polak, aged 22, civil servant of the Nederlands Israëlitische Gemeente (Dutch Israelitic Community), has been declared from his own knowledge, that on the 15th of this month at nine o'clock, 0 minutes he has found deceased: Broekhuijsen, Maurits, 65 years of age, without profession, born and residing here, spouse of Hilsum, Susanna, son of Broekhuijsen, Moses and Zwart, Hester, both deceased.

Maurits Broekhuijsen committed suicide together with his wife Susanne Hilsum, on the 15th of May, 1940.
They are burried on the Jewish cemetery in Wassenaar.
