Herman Lodewijk Alexander Visser was the son of Herman Lodewijk Visser and Charlotte Visser (they were cousins). His father died 22 days before the birth of his son.
Herman L.A. Visser went to law school. in 1896 he recieved his doctorate in law at the University of Amsterdam on the thesis entitled 'Psychiatric surveillance in prisons'. He established himself first as a lawyer but was more of a researcher.
On 28 May 1943 he ended his life to escape deportation.
