Sariena van Esso-Kan was the daughter of Meijer Abraham Kan and Serlina van Zuiden. Her husband Levie Meijer van Esso died in 1931. She had two sons with him, Meijer and Maurits, the latter of whom died in 1928. Sariena and Levie had a gold and silver shop in the Eerste Hoofdstraat in Meppel. In February 1942 the business was liquidated. In October 1942 Sariena van Esso-Kan’s house, where she had gone on living after the death of her husband, was requisitioned. She stayed with acquaintances in Meppel for a few days, but in November she went to Amsterdam to live with her son Meijer and his family at Brouwersstraat 9. In the spring of 1943 she was taken from Amsterdam to Westerbork.
