Barend Broekema was a son of Abraham Broekema and Aaltje Cohen. Between 1934 and 1941 he lived subsequently in Veendam, Winschoten, Assen, Veendam, Wildervank, Utrecht, Hilversum, Coevorden, Apeldoorn, Amsterdam. Groningen and Amsterdam. He married Greta Koekoek on 5 August 1942.
