Ilse Rolef was a daughter of Theo Rolef and Irene Mayer. In the 1930's she fled to the Netherlands, together with her brother and sister. There she and her sister Edith lived at the Nederlands-Israëlitisch Meisjesweeshuis (Dutch Jewish orphanage for girls) in Amsterdam. Her twin brother, Gerd, lived at the Nederlands Israëlitisch Jongensweeshuis (Dutch Jewish orphanage for boys), Megadle Jethomiem. Their parents still lived in Germany. They were, like their children, deported and killed.
