Salomon Swart was the ninth child of Nathan Swart, a peddler, and Johanna Groen. His parents died before the war. Salomon Swart was an errand boy and later became a diamond polisher. He married Grietje Deutz, daughter of Jacob Levie Deutz and Sara Haas, in Amsterdam on 25 February 1903.
The couple had seven children: Sara, Johanna, Jacob, Elisabeth, Nathan, Louis and a daughter Catharina who died before the war.
Copies remain of Salomon Swart and Grietje Deutz's marriage certificate and of the birth certificates of Sara Swart, Johanna Swart, Jacob Swart and Nathan Swart.
