Joseph Schaap was a son of Gompel Wolf Schaap and Hendrina Walvisch. He married 21 February 1917 in Amsterdam to Maria Bertha Mooleman, a daughter of Abraham Mooleman and Grietje Frank.
Joseph Schaap had six other brothers: Wolf, Abraham, Salomon, Jonas, Mozes and Hartog who also have been killed during the Holocaust. His only sister has survived the war.
