Ernst Herman Cohen was a son of Jacob Cohen en Gertrud Gotthelf. His father owned a furniture shop in the down of Deventer; two of his uncles were prominent members of the Deventer zionist movement. Ernst was a member of the "Vereniging tot Vakopleiding door Palestinapioniers", he was preparing for emigration to Palestine.
