Lina Mendelson-Scheffer had married during the war. Her husband survived the war.
Lina came from a poor family with a grocery shop, which the Mendelson family saw as beneath their station. In fact the parents of her prospective husband refused to meet her. Mendelson responded by inviting her to the family’s seder celebration, at which guests may not be turned away. This led to Lina being welcomed into the family after all.
