Bernard van Hessen was a son of Heiman van Hessen and Clara van Hessen-Bloch. He married at Nieuwer Amstel on 14 April 1938 to Clara Annetta Okker. The couple had one son in 1941, who survived the Holocaust.
His last address in Amsterdam was Anthonie van Dijkstraat 13.
