Emile Louis Katan attended the Economische Hogeschool (polytechnic for economics) in Rotterdam. He was unmarried. During the Nazi invasion in early May 1940, he was a sergeant with the Dutch Artillerie Meet Compagnie (AMT).
Emile Louis Katan joined the Ordedienst (OD) and performed espionage. On 11 July 1941 he was caught in The Hague and deported to Sachsenhausen via the prisons in Scheveningen and Utrecht and the camp at Amersfoort.
