Tobias Coopman was a son of Benjamin Coopman and Elisabeth Reens. He married Lea Schrijver in Amsterdam on 14 August 1913, a daughter of Juda Schrijver and Schoontje Gobes.
The couple had five children: Elisabeth, (married and divorcef from Leendert Bierman, survived the Holocaust but again divorced from the husband of her 2nd marriage), Schoontje, Engelina, Juda and Benjamin. Both Juda and Benjamin still lived with their parents.
