Walter Salmon was the youngest son of Sally Salmon and Selma Hamburger. His mother, brother Siegfried and sister Ilse also died in concentration camps.

Walter Salmon's father had been in French imprisonment for a number of years after thi First World War. He died in 1930 and was buried at Wiesbaden Schierstein. Also the brother of Walter Salmon, Heinz, who died in 1929, had been buried there.
