Betje Elkerbout-Bloemendal was mixed married. Betje was arrested in 1943 because of ’preferential treatment of Jews’. Her sister 487866 and her mother 526876 stayed at her house in Gorinchem in hiding. Marianne and Pietje were arrested there after betrayal and deported to Auschwitz via Westerbork.
Betje hoped that she would be exempted from deportation because of her mixed marriage and her pregnancy, but in March 1944 she was deported to Westerbork.

Many letters of Betje Bloemendal remain for the period July 1943 - February 1944, written from the Zuiderziekenhuis in Rotterdam. She stayed there until she delivered her third child, after which she was sent to Westerbork with her baby and from there to Auschwitz alone. These letters will be published in 2010 in the book De vrouw die zegt dat zij mijn moeder is, a family history of J. Uyterlinde.
