Pieter Thomas Leonard Kan studied medicine in Amsterdam, where he sat for his medical finals on 23 January 1897. He obtained his doctoral degree on 39 May 1899 in Amsterdam on the thesis 'On dehiscence in the front wall and in the bottom of the tympanic cavity'. Pieter Thomas Leonard Kan was admitted as unsalaried university lecturer in otorhinolaryngology. In 1907 followed his appointment to extraordinary (after 1920: ordinary) professor. His inaugural lecture had the title: 'Development through the ages of throat, nose and ear surgery'. In 1929, Pieter Kan tendered his resignation due to ill health, which was accepted.
